The Houston Texans are buying more of what analytics are selling.
According to multiple reports on Sunday, the Texans have hired Curtis Goodwin as their new performance data scientist.
The former Fort Worth Boswell High School mathematics department head will be a part of the information systems run by director Russell Joyner.
According to Goodwin’s LinkedIn profile, Goodwin earned his Masters of Science in advanced data analytics in 2020 from the University of North Texas. Goodwin also has a bachelor’s in business from Maryville University of St. Louis and a masters in education from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. Prior to joining Boswell, Goodwin was a mathematics teacher and head varsity basketball coach at Schaumburg High School in the Chicago metro area.
“We use Russell Joyner and his group quite a bit relative to everything from the prediction of an injury to the value of a trade to the value of a contract relative to the player, relative to the market,” coach Bill O’Brien told reporters on April 16.
The Texans can use all of the analytics they can get as O’Brien, now with full-time general manager powers, seeks to keep the winning window under Deshaun Watson open while not sacrificing the salary cap in the process.
