Texans go heavy in the secondary in latest NFL.com 3-round mock draft

The Houston Texans have pressing needs along the offensive line, but a less conspicuous issue that exists on the team is in the secondary.

Starting cornerback Johnathan Joseph is long in the tooth, and will be 35 years old come Week 1. Kareem Jackson was a successful jack of all trades for Houston’s defense, but he is also creeping up in age and will be 31 when Opening Day rolls around. Plus, he is currently without a contract. Should the Texans even bring back someone like that with that many miles on the gridiron?

Chad Reuter from NFL.com had the Texans address the offensive line with their first-round pick. However, in the second round with 54th overall pick, he foresees the Texans taking former Temple Owls cornerback Rock Ya-Sin.

Houston’s cornerback situation is in flux due to several veteran free agents being on the market. Ya-Sin played just one year of major college football, but has the short memory and physicality to succeed in the NFL.

In the third round, Houston goes for help in the secondary again with Iowa Hawkeyes safety Amani Hooker.

If Tyrann Mathieu does not re-sign with the Texans, Hooker could take over those playmaking responsibilities in the box and in coverage.

Houston does need help in the secondary, and the latest mock from NFL.com spells out how they get younger in the secondary quickly.
