Nick Caserio still hasn’t solved one of the biggest issues facing the franchise since he was introduced as general manager on Jan. 8.
Not only Deshaun Watson’s disdain with the Houston Texans grown, it has now metastasized to the point the three-time Pro Bowler has requested a trade from the team.
For Caserio, there are no deadlines such as the start of free agency or the NFL draft. Instead, the front office is taking a daily evaluation of the Watson situation.
“Our timeline is, we’re a one-day-at-a-time organization, and we’re all about work, and we’re all about doing the best thing,” Caserio said. “Whatever we can do to maximize that day, that’s what we’re focused on. So anything beyond that, like, we’re only granted one day, right.”
The Texans only had one Friday on Jan. 29, and they used it to introduce their fourth full-time coach in team history, David Culley. The 65-year-old developed a good rapport with Watson at the 2020 Pro Bowl in Orlando, but many happenings have transpired, mostly for the worse, in those 12 months that have now soured Watson on the Texans.
“We’re going to try to take advantage and make it the best Friday possible and we’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow,” said Caserio. “So that’s where our focus is and that’s where the commitment’s going to remain.”
