Texans GM Nick Caserio says there is no timetable to bring along QB Davis Mills

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio says there is no timetable in place when it comes to the development of quarterback Davis Mills.

Mills was the first selection of the Caserio era when the Texans picked him in the third round at No. 67 overall in the 2021 NFL draft.

“No different than any other player,” Caserio told reporters at the Texans’ 18th annual charity golf classic when asked about Davis’ timetable. “Bring him in, teach him our system, teach him our terminology, take it one step at a time.”

Davis is the fourth quarterback listed on the Texans’ roster. The other two are Deshaun Watson, Tyrod Taylor, and Ryan Finley. Given Watson’s off-field complications, both legally and with the franchise, his participation is unlikely. That leaves Taylor, a former Pro Bowler, and Finley, who enters his third season, as Mills’ realistic competition for playing time under new coach David Culley.

“Again, different players are going to be able to absorb more information than others, some can learn it quickly and move on to the next thing,” Caserio said. “Each player is going to be different. Each learning progression is going to be a little bit different, so part of our job as coaches is to get a feel, ‘Okay, this is too much. This guy, you can load his bucket a little bit.’ That’s the teaching component and then when you get on the field, again, it’s about fundamentals and it’s about a foundation. It’s not about Xs and Os at this point.”

Rookie minicamp begins May 14 for the Texans. The coaches will get a chance to see how much of a load they can put into Mills’ bucket as he works to become part of the Texans’ great reset at quarterback.
