Texans give a bigger practice squad salary to QB Alex McGough

If it is any indication as to how badly the Houston Texans are hurting at backup quarterback, look no further than their recent signing to the practice squad.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans signed quarterback Alex McGough to the practice squad and gave him a bigger practice squad salary than the minimum $8,000 per week. Apparently, the Texans were going against other NFL teams that really coveted the former 2018 seventh-round pick from Florida International.

The Seahawks drafted McGough last year, but he did not make the final cuts, but was signed back to the practice squad. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed McGough to a reserve/future contract in January, and he spent the offseason and training camp with the AFC South club.

That the Texans would have interest in McGough makes sense given the fact his quarterbacks coach for his rookie year was none other than the current Texans quarterbacks coach, Carl Smith. The former Seattle quarterbacks coach may feel he has unfinished business with McGough and can complete his transition to being a serviceable NFL quarterback, which is just what the Texans could use with McCarron coming back from a thumb injury and Joe Webb sustaining a foot injury in the preseason finale.
