Texans franchise tag OLB Jadeveon Clowney

In an expected move, the Houston Texans are placing the franchise tag on outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, per multiple reports.

As a premier edge rusher, Clowney wasn’t expected to see the free agent market. With no long-term extension in sight, the Texans decided to use the franchise tag to elongate the process.

Had Clowney reached the free agent market, the Colts likely would have had plenty of interest with their need to add a big-time pass rusher. However, the South Carolina product won’t be getting other offers unless the Texans rescind the franchise tag, which will pay Clowney $15.4 million for the 2019 season.

Clowney is coming off of a 2018 season that saw him play 15 games while recording 9.0 sacks, 16 tackles for loss and 21 quarterback hits.

The Texans have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal with Clowney. Should the two parties fail to do so, he will play the 2019 season under the franchise tag.
