Texans expected to cut WR Demaryius Thomas

The Houston Texans are expected to release veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, according to a report from NFL Network’s James Palmer.

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway traded Thomas to Houston in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick last fall. By trading Thomas, Denver saved up to $18 million in salary cap space.

With the Texans, Thomas hauled in 23 receptions for 275 yards and two touchdowns in seven games. He tore his left Achilles in Week 16, prematurely ending his season. Thomas tore his right Achilles during his rookie season with Denver in 2010 and recovered in six months.

Thomas, 31, is approaching his tenth season in the league. Because he is recovering from a serious injury, he may remain a free agent for a while. Before being traded away, Thomas caught 665 passes for 9,055 yards during his eight and a half seasons with the Broncos.

Thomas ranks second in franchise history in yards and touchdowns, trailing only wide receiver Rod Smith (11,389; 68).
