Texans earn top grade from Pro Football Focus for offseason moves

The 2022 offseason was the first chance general manager Nick Caserio had a chance to truly fix the Houston Texans.

With a proprietary No. 3 overall pick in Round 1 and a No. 37 overall pick in Round 2, one would figure Caserio had enough draft capital to find two quality starters. Throw in a little extra salary cap space to work with in free agency, and the Texans could at least position themselves to whether a better rebuilding season to significantly impact the roster in 2023.

According to Sam Monson from Pro Football Focus, the Texans had a good offseason, earning them an A-minus overall. Part of what helped the grade was the ability to get “full market value” for their quarterback trade with the Cleveland Browns, which gave them two first-round picks to work with in the 2022 draft. Caserio was able to wheel and deal in the first round, grabbing LSU cornerback Derek Stingley No. 3 overall and then using Cleveland’s No. 13 overall pick to trade back to No. 15 and get Texas A&M’s Kenyon Green.

Derek Stingley Jr. brings some of the highest upside in the draft. His play in 2019 as a freshman at LSU was the best cornerback play PFF has graded in college since 2014. He earned a 91.7 PFF grade that year before injuries set him back. Houston is banking that the 2019 version of Stingley is still there, and that’s game-changing. The Texans added players that have a clear pathway to starting or being featured heavily all the way down to the fifth round. The Texans might finally be heading somewhere positive.

The Texans have the Browns’ first-round picks through the 2024 drafts. Houston will have two more cracks at having exemplary offseasons.

Ultimately Caserio’s offseason grades are meaningless if they don’t produce winning seasons. The balance of the offseason workouts and training camp will show how much further the Texans need to go.
