Texans DT D.J. Reader: DE Charles Omenihu has a ‘tremendous amount of talent’

The Houston Texans probably didn’t envision former Texas Longhorn Charles Omenihu falling to them in the fifth-round. A player mocked as high as the early second and as low as the mid-fourth, most expected him to be long gone.

But, he wasn’t picked before then, and the Texans jumped upon the opportunity.

Though raw in his technique, Omenihu is a rare talent with an even more rare blend of size and athleticism.

At the NFL Combine, Omenihu measured in at an NFL-ready 6-5, 280. He then wowed to the tune of a 36.5 inch vertical and a 115-inch broad jump; a testament to his surreal explosiveness. In his final year in Austin, he won the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

A stalwart of the Texans defensive line, D.J. Reader, is impressed by the rookie and his development to refining technique.

When asked how Omenihu’s development is going on Monday, Reader responded by saying: “I think he’s been doing good. Chuck’s [Charles] came in, he’s listening, does his best to learn.”

Part of that listening Reader mentions is Omenihu’s constant learning and watching of three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. Doing that will only help continue his development.

“I think he’s just going to continue to develop,” said Reader.

Though Omenihu hasn’t yet recorded an NFL sack, Reader is high on the rookie. And for a good reason, the physical specimen is an excellent talent for the Texans defensive line.

“He’s got a tremendous amount of talent, Reader said. “He’s a great player.”
