Texans’ Deshaun Watson explains interceptions in 30-23 loss to the Colts

On Sunday, Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson threw fourth-quarter two interceptions to one touchdown in Houston’s 30-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. In typical football junkie fashion, Watson explained what happened in each.

On the first, Watson intended to hit running back Duke Johnson for a checkdown. The problem: he threw it off platform into the outstretched hands of Colts cornerback Pierre Desir.

“It might have looked like I was trying to throw it all the way back and throw it away, I wasn’t,” said Watson after the game. We had a return here on a crossing route and a tight end and running back was going this way.”

“It was zone coverage so the tight-end was going,” Watson continued. “I was getting back to my tight end — the check-down — and when I turned and was throwing. I think it was 96 (Denico Autry) was in my face and when I was trying to come down I couldn’t come all the way down. It sailed on me. 35 (Pierre Desir) was sitting right there in the perfect position.”

The second interception ended the game. With 39 seconds left, Watson attempted to strike through the middle of the Colts’ defense with a throw to wide receiver Keke Coutee. However, the ball sailed through Coutee’s hands, which gave All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard to get an interception — which he did.

The game-ending interception needs less of an explanation. “The last one tipped up off (Keke) Coutee’s hands and Darius (Leonard) made a great play,” said Watson.

In all, Watson now has five interceptions on the year. While some may not be on the dynamic quarterback, they count as such. Nonetheless, Houston is moving on to the Oakland Raiders in Week 8.
