Texans DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney not being a ‘worker bee’ may earn him the franchise tag

Some surprising news has begun to emerge from the Houston Texans via Peter King of NBC’s Football Morning in America, and it has to do with star edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

Despite being one of the most disruptive defensive forces these past few years, the Texans appear hesitant to sign him to a new big-money deal as he prepares to hit free agency.

According to King, the Texans are yet to be fully convinced by his attitude supposedly stating that he is not “the worker bee” that his defensive teammates are, presumably such as J.J. Watt.

The ramifications of this are league wide. Not only will this have raised the ears of general managers from coast to coast, but for Clowney this hugely increases the chances of him being franchise tagged giving the Texans another chance to see if they believe he is worth the Khalil Mack/Aaron Donald figures that everybody has him earning within the next few years.

If they opt to tag Clowney, this will see him earning over $1 million per game, and will give Bill O’Brien and Brian Gaine a clear insight into how well Clowney performs once he is earning such a large paycheck.

The first overall pick back in 2014, Clowney has well and truly lived up to expectations the past few years after a tough first couple of seasons, ravaged by injuries. Between 2016 and 2018 Clowney has been named to consecutive Pro Bowls, and a second-team All-Pro honor back in 2016.
