The Houston Texans have a little over six weeks between the conclusion of their offseason workouts and training camp.
Don’t expect second-year edge defender Jonathan Greenard, who is transitioning from playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 to a defensive end in a 4-3 front, to take too much time away from the game.
“There is no time off,” Greenard told reporters on a Zoom call on June 9. “I pretty much, like I said, I’ll relax a little bit, but I’m still going to get my workouts in every day just to make sure I stay ahead of the game because COVID last year just messed everything up to where I didn’t work out until pretty much I got to camp, pretty much. Now, I have full season of working out.”
The COVID-19 lockdowns nixed the NFL’s offseason program entirely. Although teams were able to meet with players virtually during the spring, they never saw one another on the field until August with a month-long training camp.
After an abbreviated offseason, Greenard provided Houston with 19 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 1.0 sack, and a pass breakup in 13 games, one of which he started.
As the Texans’ 2020 third-round pick gears up for his second season in the league, Greenard is feeling “better.”
Said Greenard: “I feel stronger, faster, more smart, more comfortable in everything. Like I said, I think everybody feels that way a little bit having a whole year under your belt, especially speaking for rookies. For us to just have a whole year of working out and now we will be able to go play and show what we really can do.”
The Texans report to training camp on July 27 and will have their practices at Houston Methodist Training Center, making it the 18th time the team will stay in Houston for training camp.
