Texans DE J.J. Watt releases two-year report on Hurricane Harvey relief

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt released a summary of his two-year report on how the J.J. Watt Foundation has helped with relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey, which hit Houston and most of Texas’ Gulf region in late August of 2018.

According to official numbers from Watt’s foundation, the $41.6 million raised went towards repairing 1,183 homes, rebuilding 971 childcare centers that service 108,731 kids, provided mental and physical health services to 8,900 people, and distributed 337,000 prescription drugs to people who were under insured or had no insurance at all. The foundation also served 239,000,000 meals to individuals affected by Harvey.

Watt could not have done it alone. Much like in pro football, it takes a team. Baker Ripley helped with the case management, Americares helped provide with the physical and mental health services along with distribution of medicine. Feeding America helped coordinate with local food banks to deliver food. All Hands & Hearts helped rebuild damaged homes. Habitat for Humanity was also a partner in helping rebuild homes.

Watt’s efforts earned him the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year, and has made him the poster boy for philanthropy in pro sports.
