Texans DE Angelo Blackson isn’t taking his new contract for granted

Defensive end Angelo Blackson is entering his third year on the Houston Texans. In his first two seasons, Blackson’s shown continuous improvement — going from an end of the bench member in 2017 to a key cog in the defensive line rotation in 2018.

In the 2019 offseason, Blackson’s improvement was rewarded to the tune of a three-year, $12 million contract. Starting defensive tackle D.J. Reader sees him as deserving of the contract.

“He’s playing good,” said Reader on Monday after training camp. “Just excited, you saw it in the offseason he reaped his rewards and he’s comfortable, feeling good.”

Some players get that new shiny contract and watch their motivation slip away; Blackson isn’t that, according to Reader.

“I think he’s done a good job coming back with his body in shape,” said Reader. “[He has] a different mindset of how he’s going to be as a player.”

Blackson’s new mindset has been worked upon throughout training camp and preseason football.

“He’s executed that [different mindset] so far in this camp and preseason,” said Reader.

Now, it’s time to see it when it starts counting on September 9th, against the New Orleans Saints on a national stage.
