Texans’ Davis Mills barely escapes the bottom-5 of starting QB power rankings

Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills isn’t the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, but he is quickly approaching the conversation.

According to Cody Benjamin from CBS Sports, the former 2021 third-rounder from Stanford was listed as the 27th-best starting quarterback in their power rankings.

More of the same in Houston, where Mills’ reign as the underrated gem of the 2021 QB class is fast approaching a potential end. He picked the worst times to turn the ball over in a winnable Week 3 loss to Chicago. (-3)

Even though Mills had problems with turnovers against the Chicago Bears in Week 3, coach Lovie Smith saw some improvement from the young signal caller despite the 23-20 heartbreaker at Soldier Field.

“I thought he threw better passes yesterday than he did in the previous week,” Smith told reporters Sept. 26. “There’s small progress being made throughout with all of the players and of course he’s the biggest part of that. It’s hard to talk about progress when you finish the way we did though.”

The best of the 2021 draft class was Trevor Lawrence at No. 14. Justin Fields was No. 23. Zach Wilson was not on the list due to injury, leaving backup Joe Flacco No. 30 in the rankings. Similarly Mac Jones was absent due to injury, and his backup, Brian Hoyer, was No. 32.

Mills has a chance to avoid the bottom-5 with a solid performance over the Los Angeles Chargers, who come to NRG Stadium Oct. 2 for a noontime kickoff for Week 4. The Chargers are favored over the Texans, and Los Angeles is the biggest road favorite for Week 4.
