HOUSTON — The Houston Texans have interviewed the first candidate for their vacant head coaching position.
Friday afternoon, the Texans announced that they interviewed Brian Flores one day following the dismissal of David Culley. Flores spent three seasons as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where he went 24-25 during his time at the helm.
His best season came during the 2020 campaign, where Flores coached the Dolphins to a 10-6 record. Miami missed the playoffs despite their success, but it marked the first time since 2016 the Dolphins recorded double-digit wins in a season.
The Dolphins fired Flores on Monday after Miami finished the 2021 season with a 9-8 record.
Prior to his time coaching the Dolphins, Flores spent 10 years working alongside Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, starting his coaching career as a special teams’ assistant in 2008. After working his way through the ranks, Belichick promoted Flores to linebackers coach, where he held the position from 2016-2018 before joining Miami.
Flores is one of two candidates the Texans have been linked to since Culley’s jettison on Thursday. The other candidate is Patriots’ inside linebackers coach, Jerod Mayo.
Flores held an additional interview for a coaching vacancy with the Chicago Bears earlier in the day. According to Caserio, there is no timetable on the Texans’ head coaching hire and will choose a candidate based on who makes the organization comfortable.
