One of the more curious elements of the Houston Texans’ coaching change was the retaining of offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.
The 34-year-old was a branch on the Bill O’Brien coaching tree, and his inclusion in the David Culley regime was curious given their lack of previous coaching associations.
Culley explained at Texans’ rookie minicamp on May 15 why he kept the former Eastern Illinois product on the staff.
“Oh, I knew about him,” Culley said. “We played against him three years at other places I’ve been. I knew they’ve been very good offensively. I like what he’s all about. The thing about when I interviewed Tim and we talked to Tim about it, I love the mindset of — I’m going back again to just like when [general manager] Nick (Caserio) brought me in here, this organization brought me in here.”
Culley says that Kelly also shares some of his ideas on “winning football.”
Said Kelly: “We had some like-mindedness as far as how we look at things and I felt the same way with Tim when I talked to Tim about winning football. Again, that was a part of also why Tim is also still here.”
Kelly will have to work through the Texans’ quarterback situation with Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Finley, and third-round rookie Davis Mills vying to replace three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson.
