The Houston Texans are confident in rookie quarterback Davis Mills’ ability to throw from every platform.
Coach David Culley lauded the third-round pick from Stanford in his Wednesday meeting with the media.
“He did a nice job especially getting to the right,” Culley said. “He was very, very good going to the right. He can make all the throws. His accuracy is very good. So, there is not an issue with him going either way and making those kinds of throws.”
Mills completed 33 passes on 49 attempts for 331 yards and a touchdown in the Texans’ 33-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14, which was the rookie’s first start since Week 8 after completing a dismal six-game start with subsequent losing streak.
Where Mills has to improve, according to Culley, is in his ability to get the ball out faster.
“He just has to be more decisive when he is getting ready to make a throw, just no hesitation,” said Culley. “What happened to him in the past was those hesitations created interceptions because the ball was late trying to get the ball down the field, especially in the middle of the field where most of his interceptions came from.”
Mills has thrown just one interception in his last four appearances. The last multi-interception game for Mills was in Week 6 in the 31-3 loss at the Indianapolis Colts.
Week 15 will see Mills go against another quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft class in Trevor Lawrence as the Texans face the Jacksonville Jaguars, who used their No. 1 overall pick on the highly touted signal caller from Clemson.
