Texans coach David Culley on the NFL trade deadline: ‘My focus is on coaching football’

HOUSTON — With the NFL less than a week away from its Nov. 2 trade deadline, the Houston Texans remain the most coveted team in the rumor mill. The Texans could have a fire sale and depart from several veteran players, headlined by disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson who requested a trade from the organization in late January.

Amid his first rodeo as coach at the deadline, David Culley will not allow the endless chatter to defer his primary task for the Texans.

“For myself, I don’t think anything about that,” Culley said Wednesday morning. “That’s [general manager] Nick (Caserio) — he is the one who takes care of that. Right now, my focus is on coaching this football.”

Culley said discussing the impact of a potential trade from the X’s and O’s perspectives is the only responsibility he will have at the deadline. Along with Caserio, it’s a commitment Culley has held with every roster change the Texans have made this season.

“Block out the outside noise — the most important thing is what’s inside this locker room,” he said. “We don’t ever talk about it. We basically just try to do the things that I just mentioned that we have to get better on. Eliminate the penalties, eliminate the big plays and tackling and we do that. That’s all our discussion is and that’s all we ever hear about in our dressing room.”

According to multiple reports, the Texans are interested in building their draft capital in any exchange.

In addition to Watson, safety Lonnie Johnson, defensive end Charles Omenihu, and linebacker Zach Cunningham are additional players the Texans could deal ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
