Texans coach David Culley needs to see more consistency from rookie QB Davis Mills

Davis Mills had a decent first game against the Green Bay Packers in the Houston Texans’ 26-7 preseason win at Lambeau Field on Aug. 14.

The rookie third-rounder from Stanford completed 11 passes on 22 attempts for 112 yards and an interception during his stretch of play that lasted from around 9:00 to go in the first quarter through the opening drive of the third quarter.

It was a good start, but coach David Culley knows what he wants to see from Mills against the Dallas Cowboys Aug. 21 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“Consistency,” Culley said. “I’m telling you the consistency. And that’s a good question today because yesterday in practice, man, he’s having a really good day in practice yesterday.”

Culley says that Mills threw an interception in Wednesday’s practice after throwing a bad pass, but the rookie managed to recover from the poor plays and not let it affect him.

“As I’ve said before, he’s a heck of a guy from the standpoint of understanding and brushing those things off and coming back with the next play mentality,” said Culley. “But we’ve got to eliminate those kinds of things, and I expect him to be more consistent and take better care of the ball.”

If Mills is able to make it through the Cowboys game without committing any further turnovers and maintaining at least a 50.0% completion rate, it will technically be an improvement from his first game against the Packers. Nevertheless, the Texans are hoping Mills is consistent with his gameplay so that they know what they have in the rookie.
