Texans aren’t expecting WR Keke Coutee to play Week 1

The Houston Texans aren’t expecting wide receiver Keke Coutee to be ready for the season opener on September 9th in New Orleans. Coach Bill O’Brien said on Tuesday on the matter that he’s “not hopeful” for his return by Week 1.

“But stranger things have happened,” O’Brien says.

Coutee returned to practice on Monday, in a walkthrough capacity. The second-year former Red Raider suffered, what he calls, a “minor” ankle injury against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.

A rookie in 2018, Coutee had trouble staying on the field. He battled a lingering hamstring issue for the entirety of the season, finishing the year with 28 catches for 287 yards and 1 touchdown. He led the Texans in receptions (11), yards (110), and touchdowns (1) against the Indianapolis Colts in a playoff loss.

In the meantime, the Texans will insert DeAndre Carter in Coutee’s native slot role. Though a career return man, the receiver has made strides in training camp.
