How much confidence does the rest of the sports world have in the Houston Texans’ quarterback room? Enough to rank them at the bottom of the entire 32-team league.
According to Mike Jones of USA TODAY, the Texans have the worst quarterback situation in the NFL with Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Finley, rookie Davis Mills, and Deshaun Watson technically still under contract.
Deshaun Watson is unlikely to play for Houston again (regardless of how his legal battles play out). Tyrod Taylor is a solid veteran quarterback but has started just four games in the last three years, and third-rounder Davis Mills is a project.
The selection of Mills was the first one of the Nick Caserio era. The Texans’ fifth full-time general manager in club history said on April 30 the pick was part of the team’s emphasis on creating competition throughout the roster.
“We’re trying to create a culture of competition, selflessness, and toughness, so who are the players that embody that along with their physical traits and characteristics, that’s our responsibility to try to find those players and that’s what we’re hopefully going to try to continue to do,” Caserio said. “And, again, you have to be purposeful and you have to stay disciplined and just try to make the decisions that you feel make the most sense for your organization.”
The Texans may be able to create competition at quarterback. However, whoever wins that battle may be like the Monopoly player that only owns Mediterranean and Baltic Avenues.
