Tewkesbury Borough Council appoints new chief executive

Tewkesbury Borough Council has appointed Alistair Cunningham as its new chief executive.

Mr Cunningham is a former joint chief executive of Wiltshire Council and director of a public sector consultancy and programme management company. He is set to take over from Mike Dawson at the Gloucestershire-based organisation in June.

Mr Dawson will be retiring after 13 years in the role and after some 49 years of local government service. Tewkesbury Borough Council praised Mr Dawson for his contribution to the group and its services for local residents, saying he had “constantly” delivered.

It added that after having faced “many challenges” Mr Dawson was looking forward to spending more time with his family and exploring interests outside work.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s leader, Cllr Rob Bird, said: “We are extremely grateful to Mike Dawson for the fantastic service he has given over the last 13 years, from which we have all benefited significantly.

“His leadership, contribution and positive impact has been exceptional, and we all wish him a very happy and well-deserved retirement.”

Mr Bird also welcomed the appointment of Mr Cunningham, announced following a council meeting on Tuesday (February 22), saying he would bring a “wealth of knowledge and experience” to the role.

Mr Cunningham said: “I’m incredibly proud to be appointed to the role of Chief Executive at Tewkesbury Borough Council. It is an ambitious, forward-looking council and I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity of taking it further on its growth journey."
