Tests for staff at RAC call centre after spike in Covid-19 cases

Staff at the RAC call centre in Trafford are being tested for coronavirus after an increase in cases at the site, it's been revealed.

The motoring services company confirmed to the Manchester Evening News it was working with Trafford Council and Public Heath England in relation to its offices on Thomas Street in Stretford.

Bosses confirmed a deep clean was ordered.

All staff are now having same day tests to reduce transmission before they return to the site.

Anyone testing positive would self-isolate immediately.

A source said cases had affected the breakdown team and the renewals and customer services team at the complex.

More than 20 employees are understood to have been affected, the source added.

They said: "Nobody is allowed in until a lateral flow test is completed and a negative result is confirmed."

The RAC said it had seen an 'increase' in cases at the site after a spike in cases in the Manchester area following the emergence of the more infectious variant of the Covid-19 virus.

Trafford Council said lateral flow tests for staff were underway. They give same-day results.

In a statement to the M.E.N. , the RAC said: "We are working with Trafford Council and Public Health England in response to Covid-19 cases at our Stretford office.

"Since the start of the pandemic we have followed all government guidelines to protect our staff and make our offices Covid-secure.

"However, following a spike in cases in the Manchester area associated with the new, more virulent strain, we have also seen an increase at our site.

"We voluntarily carried out a further deep clean and are conducting same-day tests on all staff before returning to site to reduce the risk of transmission."

Eleanor Roaf, director of public health at Trafford Council, said: "We are working with RAC in response to Covid-19 cases at their Stretford call centre.

"RAC voluntarily carried out a deep clean and we are now arranging lateral flow tests for their staff.

"This provides staff with same-day results which means that anyone who tests positive will self-isolate and reduce the risk of any transmission."
