Testo's roundabout roadworks still in place as traffic levels plummet during coronavirus lockdown

Roadworks and speed restrictions around the Testo's roundabout project in South Tyneside are still in place despite traffic levels falling dramatically.

Workers remain at the East Boldon junction carrying out the improvements including building a flyover to keep traffic on the A19 without having to stop.

Road workers have been identified by the Government as key workers, as roads need to be kept open and maintained despite the coronavirus lockdown.

As a result, drivers are asked to keep to the 40mph speed restrictions around Testo's and temporary road closures at weekends will go ahead as normal.

During the summer months, work on the £125m scheme is expected to ramp up as the flyover which carries A19 traffic over the roundabout is built.

This will happen in three separate stages; putting in the piers (central supports), building supporting walls to support the beams, and then finally installing the beams themselves.

By the end of the summer, the flyover should be in position and ready for the road to be built on it.

Highways England were unable to say if the decreased volume of traffic would help to speed up the project and get it completed before the expected end date sometime in 2021.

It is thought that traffic is down by around 50% compared to this time last year and although we are all being urged to stay at home during the coronavirus outbreak, key workers are still commuting.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “Roadworks affect all journeys which is why it is important they are completed as quickly as possible.

"All our sites have strict safeguarding measures, in line with Public Health England guidance, to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and none of our sites are open to the public.”
