Testing could help support schools return from March 8

Coronavirus tests could help pupils return to the classroom soon, with Care Minister Helen Whately saying the plans were a "work in progress."

The government are keen for children to return to school as soon as possible, with the current plans being for pupils to start returning from March 8.

Some children in Scotland and Wales will return to the classroom next week, with pressure growing on England to do the same.

Boris Johnson has continually said that reopening schools is his biggest priority, with schools expected to be the first thing to open as lockdown starts to be eased.

Today Ms Whately confirmed there is work being done on how testing will help schools return, with more detail due to be released next week.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she said: "There is work being done to look at how testing will help schools come back.

There are reports today that parents will be asked to test their children at home.

The Telegraph reports that parents will be asked to test their children twice a week under plans for a phased return to the classroom.

Asked about press reports that parents could be asked to test their children at home, she added: "I'm not going to get drawn into that, there is work in progress looking at how testing can support schools to come back.

"There's already testing going on in schools where you have children of key workers and teachers in schools at the moment because schools aren't completely closed, and there is work going on at the moment about the details of the return to schools, and there will be more said about that next week."
