NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Tesla (TSLA) is releasing an autopilot software upgrade over the next two weeks that will be sent out to all vehicles that have autopilot technology or capability, the company announced on a call with journalists on Sunday, CNBC reports.
The updated software will "essentially use radar to detect objects on the road," which will allow it to better detect when a vehicle has suddenly stopped in front of another vehicle, CNBC's Phil LeBeau noted on "Squawk Box" on Monday morning. The radar technology should decrease accident numbers, he noted.
"That's the whole idea here. It'll see objects in cars that the previous system could not see because the previous system was primarily camera-based. Now with the radar sending out electromagnetic signals it should do a better job according to Tesla of detecting objects," LeBeau explained.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that he thinks the upgraded system could have prevented the May death of a Florida-based Tesla driver who ran into a semi tractor trailer turning in front of him, according to LeBeau. However, Musk said that no system is perfect, LeBeau added.
