Tesla recalls thousands of cars amid major glitch and risk of crashes

Tesla has announced its latest recall of 2021 and 2022 models amid an overheating issue with their touchscreen display.

The recall affects hundreds of thousands of vehicles sold as the issues may cause the center touchscreen display to malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US.

Tesla's S and X from the 2021 and 2022 model years are targeted by the announcement as well as its 3 and Y models from 2022, amid fears of a crash occurring as a result of the defect.

The issue of the system's CPU overheating could prevent the centre screen from displaying images from the rearview camera, warning lights and other information, the notice warned.

It said: “A lagging or restarting CPU may prevent the center screen from displaying the rearview camera image, gear selection, windshield visibility control settings, and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Tesla has already issued a number of recalls for camera-related issues. In March, it recalled a significant number of cars because the rearview image may not have immediately displayed when a driver began to reverse.

Earlier in the year, the company recalled more than 817,000 cars over faulty seat belt chimes, and in December, Tesla recalled 356,309 of its 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles to address rearview camera issues.

All Irish Tesla drivers can check if their vehicle is included in any of the above recalls by clicking here, and entering your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number.

The company says it will be contacting each affected customer to warn them of the recall.
