Tesla owner gets key implanted in her arm so she can start car automatically

The owner of a Tesla Model 3 has had the chip from her key card implanted into her arm, so that she can start her car with a wave of her hand.

Amie DD, a software engineer and "biohacker" from Texas, already had a chip implanted in her hand, which allowed her to open her front door and launch her website on any smartphone with a tap of her hand.

However, despite Tesla using the same RFID technology in its "valet" cards, she was not able to transfer the information from the key card onto her existing chip.

So over the course of last year, she dissolved the key card in acetone, extracted the RFID tag, encapsulated it in biopolymer and had it implanted in her arm as a separate chip.

Amie documented the whole process on her blog, and in a video posted to her YouTube channel.

"I talked to a few doctors. They were a little wary about doing this because it's kind of a questionable thing," she said.

"I ended up finding a guy who does body modifications. He's very familiar with the process and sterilising everything, and the biopolymer, and the flex and how it needs to be installed."

Amie is still recovering from the operation, so she hasn't been able to share any footage of the chip working as intended yet.

"The area of the arm is inflamed and swollen right after implanting the chip," she said in a tweet.

"My friend records my videos and we didn't have time to film the implant working with my Tesla this week because I'm at @defcon!"

One thing's for sure, she'll never have to worry about losing her keys again.
