Tesla CyberTruck launch farce as “shatterproof” windows smash during demo

The unveiling of Tesla’s first electric pick-up truck turned into a farce after its “shatterproof” windows smashed during a demo.

Boss Elon Musk tried to show off the ruggedness of the CyberTruck, with its odd “Blade Runner” design, during a live demonstration in Los Angeles.

However, during a bizarre series of tests, Tesla head of design Franz von Holzhausen managed to break two of the vehicle’s side windows by throwing a metal ball at them.

A clearly sheepish Musk admitted there was “room for improvement”, adding: “At least it didn’t go through.”

He had already asked Von Holzhausen to hit the truck’s door repeatedly with a sledgehammer, suggesting it was nearly bulletproof.

The vehicle will be released at the end of 2021 and will have a range of up to 500 miles.

Tesla claims the top-spec model will be able to go from zero to 60mph in 2.9 seconds.

Prices for the truck will start from $39,900 (£31,000).
