Tesco worker dies after covid outbreak at Maryhill store

A Tesco worker has died following a covid outbreak at a Glasgow store.

A member of staff at the Maryhill Tesco Extra passed away after contracting the virus. He is believed to have been in his early 60s.

The company confirmed the death and said that they are currently supporting staff through the loss.

They added that a "very small number" of workers at the supermarket have tested positive for coronavirus and their contacts have been informed.

One worker told Glasgow Live that as many as 35 people had tested positive since the start of the year.

They added: "Tesco has been bragging about how much money they're making with the pandemic but are giving their staff zero. Other supermarkets like Morrisons and Aldi are at least rewarding their workers.

"Tesco haven't even closed for a deep clean or to get a bit of control of the situation."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “A very small number of colleagues at our Glasgow Maryhill store have tested positive for Covid-19. Their close contacts have been informed. The safety of our colleagues, customers and suppliers remains our number one priority and we are working with local public health authorities, following all government guidance and taking the relevant precautions.

"We have extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular cleaning.”
