Tesco will allow shoppers to wait in cars outside stores if it is raining in latest guidelines

Supermarket giant Tesco has rolled out a new rule for shoppers as stores around the country change the way they are operating amid the coronavirus crisis.

Following reports of stockpiling and panic buying during the early days of the lockdown.

There was also a massive surge in demand for home deliveries from people unable to get to stores.

In response, Tesco was among the retailers rolling out additional delivery slots for customers affected by the ongoing lockdown, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Strict social distancing measures were also introduced at supermarket branches across the UK. Now, Tesco has revealed it is changing the way customers queue outside its stores if the weather is bad.

Under the new guidelines, customers visiting Tesco may be asked to wait in their cars as they queue to go into stores if it is raining.

A statement on Tesco's website says: "If it's raining or particularly cold, we may ask you to stay in your car to queue – we'll let you know when you can come in."

Tesco operates 'one in, one out' policies at its supermarkets, and has imposed one-way systems in its stores to help ease congestion.

Strict social distancing measures with clear markings are also in stores, showing you where to stand as you queue to pay.
