Tesco trials X-ray scanner for customers to check avocado ripeness

  • Tesco is trialling in-store scanners in five of its stores to help customers assess avocado ripeness before purchase.
  • The scanners, developed by Dutch company One Third Avocado Scanner, use X-ray technology to indicate if an avocado is 'immediately ready for smashing' or 'better used to be sliced in a salad'.
  • This initiative aims to help shoppers choose the right avocado for their needs, thereby reducing food waste and assisting with meal planning.
  • Tesco has seen a significant increase in avocado sales, selling nearly 15 million more in the last year compared to the previous 52 weeks.
  • The five stores are in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire; Colchester, Essex; Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire; Wokingham, Berkshire; and Salisbury, Wiltshire.
