Tesco to cut 4,500 jobs from 153 of its Metro stores

Around 4,500 Tesco staff are set to lose their jobs as the supermarket announces changes to its Tesco Metro stores.

The company says it is going to "simplify and reduce processes and administrative tasks across all of our 153 Tesco Metro stores".

They say it will allow them to "serve shoppers better" and run its business "more effectively".

Jason Tarry, UK & ROI CEO, said: "In a challenging, evolving retail environment, with increasing cost pressures, we have to continue to review the way we run our stores to ensure we reflect the way our customers are shopping and do so in the most efficient way.

"We do not take any decision which impacts colleagues lightly, but have to make sure we remain relevant for customers and operate a sustainable business now and in the future."

They also add that their priority is now to support affected colleagues - with some finding alternative roles within Tesco.

Tesco has also announced changes to 134 of its 1,750 Express stores where it says 'footfall is lower'.

Changes for these stores will include reduced opening hours during quieter trading periods and a simplified stock routine.
