Tesco takes on Amazon with offer of free deliveries for Clubcard Plus members

Despite easing of lockdown and enhanced health and safety measures installed in most supermarkets across the country, almost a third of UK households are still shopping online.

Whatever reason, it’s a consumer winner as online retailers and high street supermarkets battle it out for business.

Tesco is set to take on Amazon with free deliveries, by offering the service to its Clubcard Plus members.

The enhanced loyalty scheme costs £7.99 per month and comes with a range of benefits including:

  • Savings of up to £40 per month with 10% off two shops (in store only)

  • 10% of selected Tesco brands in stores

  • Double data from Tesco Mobile

  • Access to a Clubcard Plus credit card from Tesco Bank (subject to approval)

It is not yet known when Tesco will roll out its free delivery scheme, reports The Mirror.

But it may be soon as Amazon Prime has already started giving customers free delivery on certain grocery items since the closure of its Pantry service at the end of June.

The online retailing giant expects to roll the service out nationwide by the end of the year and is planning to speed up delivery times in certain parts of the country by offering a same-day option - much like it currently does with Amazon Fresh orders.

New and existing customers subscribing to Amazon Prime are now able to order groceries through Amazon Fresh, with free delivery on orders over £40.

Amazon Prime costs £7.99 per month which gives you access to Prime Delivery: Unlimited One-Day Delivery, Same-Day Delivery, and 2-Hour Delivery with Prime Now in select residential postcodes, as well as Prime Video: Unlimited streaming of Movies, TV shows, and Amazon Originals.

Amazon said the move will start with about 300 postcodes, focused around London and the South East, with the service expanding to millions more by the end of the year.
