One item that still has buying restrictions in place at the supermarkets

There's one thing left with buying restrictions in place at supermarkets.

Sainsbury said that limits remain in place on pain relief and cold and flu products too.

In fact, limits on painkillers and cold and flu medicine apply across the board - given that they're Government mandated - with laws to ensure people don't but more than two packets at a time.

Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts said: "Very early on in the pandemic, we decided to restrict the number of products people could buy to help products stay on shelf for longer.

"We have kept this under review as availability of key items has improved and I am pleased to tell you that we have now lifted buying restrictions on all products.

"The only exception to this is painkillers which are legally restricted to two packets per person."

Supermarkets have also removed elderly only hours since they extended opening hours, saying instead that vulnerable and elderly customers have "priority" if not exclusivity at certain times.

At Tesco, elderly and vulnerable shoppers still get "priority access" on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am until 10am.

At Sainsbury's NHS and care workers will still have priority entry from 7:30am to 8am Monday to Saturday and elderly, vulnerable and disabled customers will still have priority entry from 8am to 9am Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Over at Asda,  NHS staff and carers have "priority" - meaning they are allowed to skip queues - in larger stores on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 9am, as well as Sundays 9am to 10am for browsing.

An earlier version of this story said face coverings, antibacterial handwash, antibacterial wipes, flour, and eggs were still restricted at Tesco. These restrictions have been removed, however and Tesco now has no limits on purchases outside those mandated by the Government
