Tesco shoppers warned over email scam that could steal their bank details

Tesco shoppers have been warned to stay vigilant over an email scam that could be intending to take money out of their bank accounts.

Some of the supermarket's shoppers have been sent an email telling them they could be in with the chance of winning a Tesco Gift Card worth £500. More than 170 people have reported the scam, as it has been asking shoppers to fill in their personal details or login to their Paypal accounts, The Mirror reports.

The email reads: "You have been selected to join our loyalty programme for FREE! It only takes you a minute to get access to this fantastic prize."

The UK's national fraud and cyber reporting centre Action Fraud UK has now sent out advice for anyone who is concerned about the scam.

"Your bank, or any other official organisation, won't ask you to share personal information over email or text," the organisation said. "If you need to check that it's a genuine message, contact them directly".

Action Fraud urged Brits to report any emails that "feel suspicious" to report@phishing.gov.uk - even if you're not certain it's scam. If you think you have been sent a scam email at any point, we have provided below some handy advice from Action Fraud UK that can follow.

What to do if you think you have received a scam email

  • Do not click on any links in the scam email.
  • Do not reply to the email or contact the senders in any way.
  • If you have clicked on a link in the email, do not supply any information on the website that may open.
  • Do not open any attachments that arrive with the email.

If you think you may have compromised the safety of your bank details and/or have lost money due to fraudulent misuse of your cards, you should immediately contact your bank.
