Tesco shoppers 'stuck' as flood waters gush into entrance after torrential downpours

Worried shoppers were stranded inside a Tesco Extra supermarket as footage shows water flowing down from a car park into the store amid heavy rain on Thursday.

Video footage was taken by one shocked visitor to the Tesco Extra, in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, that showed the rain water gushing into the entrance.

Heidi Reitze was shopping in the store, in Ashton Road West, at the time and said that staff were trying "frantically" to stop people going out into the flood, reported the Manchester Evening News.

She said: "All the water was coming down the slope of the car park and into the store.

"We were all stuck. There was a big crowd and the people who work there were running round frantically trying to stop people going out in it.

"They went to get brushes and started sweeping it out."

She said that there was concern from some of the shoppers as the water built up.

"It was very eventful. I could see some people were worried," she continued.

"I had to walk through a deep puddle to get out in the end."

Flash flooding has been reported around the country with torrential rain in parts this afternoon.

In Greater Manchester major roads were affected with a slip road at junction 17 of the M60 closed due to flooding.

The Met Office's Aidan Givern said: "With Atlantic weather now in charge, we can expect very changeable weather through the week. There'll be wind and rain, but also showery and sunnier periods at times."

The Met Office forecast until October 7 warns: "This will bring showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times, too many areas. Strong winds are also likely, particularly along coasts.

"As this area of low pressure moves away another is likely to move to the north of the UK.

"This will bring further showers or longer spells of rain to the north and northwest, along with the potential for strong winds."
