A Tesco security guard has saved residents in a tower block after screaming "wake up and get out" as their flats caught fire.
Fire crews were seen tackling a fire at a tower block in Manchester's Northern Quarter from an aerial platform this morning, the Manchester Evening News reports.
People in the building were "woken up with pots and pans" after the fire started and "shouting" in the street below.
One resident said a Tesco security guard "helped people" by "screaming at the top of his lungs".
He said: "I woke up and saw the security guard from Tesco screaming at the top of his lungs. I was a bit shaken up at first but then I saw the fire.
"I have never seen someone scream so much in my life, it was pretty incredible. He was shouting ‘wake up, get out the building’ for about ten minutes until the fire crews arrived.
"At first it was just smoke and we couldn’t really tell where it was coming from, then we noticed the fire on the balcony and it just bigger and bigger.
"He definitely helped people. People in the building quite quickly started packing up their things and getting out of the building with their pets.
"If it wasn’t for him it could have gone completely unnoticed. It was outside at 7.30am on a Sunday - it could have been a lot worse."
It is believed the fire started on a balcony and then spread into the building.
Residents in the area were asked to keep their doors and windows closed.
Police said there were road closures in place on High Street, Church Street and surrounding side streets.
Metrolink services were also affected, officers wrote on Twitter.
At least sixty people were evacuated from their flats, but are now returning home, according to About Manchester.
The Fire Services said: "We worked fast and hard to limit the spread of fire inside the high-rise, applying techniques and lessons learned from other recent multi-storey building fires.
"We would like to thank the residents affected for their cooperation and support this morning."
