Tesco shoppers warned about gift card scam - what to look out for

Tesco shoppers are being urged to stay vigilant over a new gift card scam that could empty your bank account.

More than 170 people have reported the scam - which emails recipients and claims they are in for a chance of winning a £500 Tesco gift card.

"You have been selected to join our loyalty programme for FREE!" The email reads. "It only takes you a minute to get access to this fantastic prize."

However, to get "one step closer" to claiming the prize, the scam asks people to log into their Paypal account or confirm their personal details.

Action Fraud, the UK's national fraud and cyber reporting centre, has issued advice for anyone concerned about the scam.

"Your bank, or any other official organisation, won't ask you to share personal information over email or text," the organisation said.

"If you need to check that it's a genuine message, contact them directly".

Action Fraud urged Brits to report any emails that "feel suspicious" to report@phishing.gov.uk - even if you're not certain it's scam.

Unfortunately, this isn't the only scam doing the rounds this month.

Martin Lewis recently issued an urgent warning over a new “clever” Post Office scam.

The MoneySavingExpert founder explained how victims are being sent a text message urging them to reschedule delivery of a parcel.

It is a variation of a similar Royal Mail scam that was circulating earlier this year, that instructed people to pay £1.99 to receive a package.

Martin said the new scam is “less obvious” as it doesn’t tell you about any payment due until you click through on a link.

“Beware. Just had a clever version of the 'pay £1.99 for Post Office Parcel delivery' scam text, aiming to steal bank info," he wrote on Twitter.

“The 'fee' isn't mentioned in the text, it talks about ‘delays in transit’ and offers ‘a date to reschedule’. It's only when you click through [that] it mentions a fee.".
