Tesco is rolling out its same-day grocery delivery service across the country as it aims to counter the threat posed by Amazon.
The UK’s largest supermarket chain already runs the service in London and the South East. Customers who order by 1pm are given a delivery slot starting from 7pm that day for a cost ranging between £3 and £8.
Tesco said on Monday that the same-day service will now reach 99 per cent of UK households and stretch from the Shetland Isles to Cornwall giving it “the biggest reach of any retailer in the UK”.
Tesco has also recently extended its same-day click and collect service to 300 UK locations and last month launched a one-hour delivery service in central London.
Adrian Letts, managing director of Tesco Online, said: “Customers tell us they like getting their shopping delivered quickly and conveniently, and with our same-day delivery service they can now order by lunch to get their shopping delivered for their evening meal.
“We've seen the service grow in popularity since we launched it in London and the South East so we're really excited to be rolling it out to customers nationwide.”
Tesco is facing increased competition after US online retail giant Amazon entered the UK grocery market last year with its Amazon Fresh service.
Amazon also recently announced a £13.7bn takeover of organic supermarket chain Whole Foods, signalling its intent to make further inroads into the grocery sector.
The big four supermarket chains have already seen discount rivals Aldi and Lidl eat into their market share and erode profit margins.
