Tesco's submits plans to open new city centre store close to where it closed its Metro branch

Tesco has submitted plans to a new store in Liverpool city centre close to where it closed another store.

The supermarket has applied for a premises license on Parker Street in Clayton Square, which is a stone’s throw from its Metro store which closed its doors in January .

If the licence is granted, the store could open inside the former Maplin on Parker Street, which closed in 2018, between Peacocks and Vision Express.

Tesco has applied for a license to sell alcohol from the premises from 6am to 11pm, Monday to Sunday.

The closure of the Tesco Metro store in Clayton Square, which was once home to the famous Owen Owen department store, came as a shock to many earlier this year.

The landmark building remains empty since the closure earlier this year.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We are in the process of applying for permissions to open a new Tesco Express store in Liverpool and look forward to serving customers in the area."
