Tesco's scan as you shop is changing and shoppers are furious

Anyone who shops with Tesco's scan as you shop will soon no longer be able to pay with cash.

The payment system will soon be changing and the scan as you shop payment area will only be accepting card payments from January 13.

The current system is exclusive to Clubcard members, as Manchester Evening News report, and allows people to pack as they go, straight from the shelves to their bag.

Some shoppers now claim that by going cashless the scan as you shop system will make things more difficult, and some have even threatened to boycott the supermarket as a result.

To make people aware of the changes, Tesco has been printing a message on customer receipts, which reads: "Scan as you shop is changing.

"The scan as you shop payment area will only be accepting card. Want to pay with cash? You can still do so by using self-service tolls or main checkouts. Our colleagues will be able to help or answer any questions."

A picture of one of the receipts was posted on Facebook group Reduce Your Supermarket Spend by one shopper, who wrote: "In case anyone doesn't know but they're stopping taking cash at scan as you shop at Tesco, know Asda already do this anyway."

A shopper shared the news on Facebook (Facebook)

Responding to the post, one Tesco shopper wrote: "Oh no why ?? I do my big shop I always pay cash always use scan as you shop too as it’s so much easier. I did it yesterday it was fine."

Somebody else added: "Feels like people that pay cash are been punished for paying that way, I for one don’t like using my card unless I really really have to, just my opinion."

"Well I’ll be stopping using Tesco’s weekly then," wrote a third.

Yet another disgruntled shopper added: "Well if they don’t accommodate me I will take my business elsewhere. Sometimes I pay card and sometimes I pay cash - I think it’s important to have the choice."

However, suggesting a way around the changes, another of the group's members, who works in Tesco, advised: "I work on this department. Our store was one of the ones who trialled this. You can still use the hand scanners and pay cash. You are directed to scan it onto any till or a self scan till where you can pay cash."

A Tesco spokesperson told Manchester Evening News: "90 per cent of our scan as you shop customers check-out using card payment, so to make it easier and faster for customers, the Scan As You Shop tills at most of our larger stores will take card payments only, from the January 13.

"The small number of Scan As You Shop customers who prefer to pay by cash can still do that at any self-service or main check-outs where colleagues will be more than happy to help."
