Tesco's new student card lets parents help pay for their child's uni meals

Tesco has launched a new gift card that parents can use to help contribute towards their kids' weekly food shop at university.

The Student Shopper account comes with two cards; one that's held by the parent or guardian and another that's kept with the student living away from home.

All three can then be topped up as and when - up to a total balance of £200.

Mark Loch, at Tesco Bank, said: " Going away to university or college for the first time can be a daunting experience for students, but their parents often have some anxiety too, not least about money management and ensuring that their children have enough money to access essentials like groceries.

"The Student Shopper card aims to offer some reassurance to parents and guardians that there’s always money available for the basics like food and other essential household items.

"For students themselves, having a card dedicated to their groceries means they can keep it separate from their other spending, helping them to budget better.

Customers can pick up a card at the gift card display point at any Tesco Express or Metro store.

Both parents and students can then top it up as and when at any checkout or over the phone.
