Tesco's latest social distancing rules mean shoppers might be asked to queue in cars if it's raining

Supermarket giant Tesco has announced a change to its rules on queuing to get into stores when it's raining amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The change means staff at stores in Glasgow may ask customers to wait in their cars instead of queueing outside, as many of us have become used to over the last few months.

A statement on Tesco's website says: "If it's raining or particularly cold, we may ask you to stay in your car to queue – we'll let you know when you can come in."

It follows the trial of a 'virtual' queuing system by Asda, the first of its kind in the UK.

The system will allow shoppers to book a place and log onto a virtual queue on their phones.

They will then be able to wait in their car until they are alerted, via message, that they are allowed to enter the store.

Asda has been trialling the system at a store in Middleton, near Leeds, with the possibility that the system will be rolled out across the UK in the near future.

Glasgow Live has asked Tesco if the new 'in car' measures apply to any of the city branches and awaits a response - but we have a feeling it could be put to good use as the weather takes a turn for the worse this week.
