Tesco had its 'biggest day of food sales in history' over Christmas

Britain's biggest supermarket had its 'best ever day of food sales on record' last Christmas, despite a "challenging" year for the high street.

The grocer said it had a bumper 19 weeks, thanks to a 'Festive five' offering on seasonal vegetables and competitive prices to mark its 100th anniversary.

In December, the supermarket said a typical basket of 21 festive products was £2.28 cheaper than the previous year – boosted by promotions around its Christmas Clubcard Prices offer.

Over the same period, Tesco said it outperformed the market in both volume and value terms, with a strong performance in fresh food.

Its online grocery business delivered over 14million orders across the 19 weeks, with an increase in both average basket size and customer satisfaction scores for the Christmas period.

The supermarket said customer reaction to the launch of Clubcard Plus in November was also "positive".

The new Clubcard will give customers additional discounts on groceries, F&F, Tesco Mobile, as well pet food, homeware and toys (TESCO)

It offers shoppers 10% off two big shops in-store as well as savings on Tesco brands and double data on Tesco Mobile for a set £7.99 fee.

Later this month, subscribers will also be able to apply for a Clubcard Plus credit card from Tesco Bank with no foreign exchange fees abroad.

Dave Lewis, Chief Executive: "In a subdued UK market we performed well, delivering our fifth consecutive Christmas of growth.

"In our Centenary year, our customer proposition was compelling, our product offering very competitive and thanks to the outstanding contribution of our colleagues, our operational performance was the best of the last six years. As a result, this Christmas we had the biggest ever day of UK food sales in our history."

On Tuesday, Morrisons admitted sales tumbled 1.7% in the final months of 2019, including on fuel, despite a petrol price war on the back of falling wholesale costs.

In a statement, the supermarket said trading conditions "remained challenging" but that customer uncertainty of the last year was sustained. It plans to open a major new branch in Camden, London over the next few years.

Aldi, meanwhile, recorded its best-ever Christmas in the UK, with sales in the four weeks to 24 December topping £1billion for the first time since opening its doors.

The family-owned chain reported an increase of 7.9% compared to the same trading period in 2018.
