Tesco praised by shoppers for new measure introduced in every UK store

Tesco have announced a new initiative that seeks to save dogs' lives amid soaring temperatures.

Workers at the supermarket giant will begin patrolling car parks outside their stores to make sure no dogs have been left alone in cars.

Staff have been trained specially on what to watch out for as they begin searching car parks for pups in danger.

Dogs should under no circumstances be left in cars on warm days, as they are at high risk of suffering from heatstroke.

With temperatures inside hot cars reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius and beyond, it is very possible for a dog to be killed by the intense heat.

As reported by Birmingham Live, Tesco stated: "We're working with the RSPCA & all of our colleagues in store have received training to ensure animal welfare is protected.

"Our colleagues regularly patrol our car parks & are given guidance on what to do if they spot a dog unattended in a car."

The confirmation comes amid a UK heatwave, with temperatures in Edinburgh reaching highs of 24 degrees Celsius next week.

Emergency animal care provider Vets Now also warned rising temperatures could increase the risk of heat stroke in dogs.

The vet service sees a spike in callouts as the weather warms up and has warned that temperatures above 20C put dogs at risk, and that survival rates for dogs with heat stroke is just 50%.

Dave Leicester, head of telehealth at Vets Now, said: "All dogs can overheat if left without water or in hot conditions for too long.

"So on hotter summer days it's best to walk your dog in the morning or evening when it's cooler."
