Tesco praised by parents over 'fabulous' t-shirt featuring girl in hijab

Tesco has been praised by parents for selling a "fabulous" T-shirt featuring a girl in a hijab.

The supermarket chain has been applauded online, after releasing the new T-shirt, which drew praise from a lot of parents after being spotted in store.

Activist and author Onjali Q Raúf, who won Waterstones Children's Book Prize in 2019, noted that she'd never seen a hijabi depicted on a Tesco fashion item before, reports Birmingham Live.

Onjali, who founded charity Making Herstory, tweeted: "Had to run by @Tesco yesterday & stopped in my tracks for the BEST reason!

"I think it's the first time I've EVER seen a girl in hijab be included like this.

"If you don't know what that means, you don't (yet) get it. Change: it's not just coming. It's here. #RepresentationMatters."

One shopper replied: "NEXT has a mural of a lil' blackboy in the kids aisle, must be a fairly recent addition. To which my 4yr old shouted, 'look there is a picture of somebody like me on the wall'. The excitement on his face moved me to tears- now his favourite shop. Representation matters!"

A second added: "That’s a huge leap forward. Now all they have to do is represent girls as scientists and engineers and put pockets in all their clothes and we might be getting there."

"This is fab. I'm going to buy one!" a third agreed.

"So flipping gorgeous to see this," said another.
