Tesco has unveiled plans to open a third convenience store in Southport town centre.
The UK’s biggest supermarket chain wants to open its latest Express store in place of the Roman clothes shop which sits by the entrance to Southport railway station.
Applications have been submitted to Sefton Council asking to redesign the shop front and install illuminated signs outside, with permission not needed to redesign the interior.
Tesco already has Express stores on Eastbank Street and Albert Road, as well as elsewhere in the town at Churchtown, Birkdale and Ainsdale. It also has a large supermarket on Town Lane.
A licensing application has been submitted requesting permission to open from 6am-midnight seven days a week.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re pleased to confirm that applications have been made to the local authority for a new Tesco Express store in Southport. This is still at a very early stage and we’ll be keen to keep the local community updated as plans develop.”
Elsewhere on the street, plans are being considered to allow 30 two-bed apartments to be created inside building formerly occupied by BHS.
The Liverpool-based JSM Company Group wants to convert all but the ground floor into housing, giving a long-term purpose to the landmark building for the first time since BHS left in 2016.
JSM previously applied for a fast-track version of planning permission last year but was refused and told a full application was needed.
That application has now been lodged with Sefton Council, whose previous rejection did not consider the contents of the application but only whether the type of application was acceptable.
Under the proposals, the upper three floors are to be converted into accommodation, while the firm is likely to submit further plans to split the ground floor into five retail units and a bar.
Sefton Council will decide on applications for both sites in due course.
