Tesco opens its first checkout (and queue) free supermarket

Tesco is opening its first checkout-free store, where shoppers can pick up their groceries and pay without going to the tills.

The trial store uses cameras to replace checkouts, with the technology designed to track items as shoppers place them in their baskets.

Customers will need to scan the Tesco app on their mobile phones as they enter the store, and this will be used to pay for items.

Tesco will register the items people pick up from the shelves using cameras as well as weight sensors.

Customers walk straight out of the supermarket and receive a receipt and are charged for the products once they have left the store.

The supermarket giant is calling the new format GetGo and it launches in High Holborn, London, on Tuesday.

Shoppers will have to scan the Tesco app on entering the store (PA)

The store will continue to employ 22 people and no jobs will be lost.

There is also a section in the store specifically for age-restricted products, with a separate exit where staff will check ID.

Tesco has been testing the technology at a trial site at its headquarters in Welwyn Garden City since 2019.

Tesco are not first to trial stores without tills. Online retailer Amazon launched its first Amazon Fresh shop in the London in February and has since opened another five in the capital.

Aldi also opened its own till-free shop last month, again in London.

Kevin Tindall, managing director of Tesco Convenience, said: "This is currently just a one-store trial, but we're looking forward to seeing how our customers respond."
